Safety

The safety of our employees, customers, communities, and contractors remains our number one priority. Fortis employees are deeply connected by a culture of safety. We consistently outperform industry averages for employee safety performance.

Fortis Safety Commitments

When it comes to health and safety, we take no days off. We think about safety in everything we do.

We respect and have genuine concern for the health, safety and well-being of those around us. When it comes to work, nothing is so urgent that we cannot take the necessary steps to do it safely.

We take personal responsibility for our safety and understand that our actions, inactions and mindfulness impacts others. We start work when it is safe to do so and stop if there are any safety concerns.

We have the courage to speak up and intervene if we see unsafe work. We will be receptive and respectful to others when approached with feedback that improves safety.

We believe that all injuries are preventable. By staying engaged with health and safety information, we will continue to learn and improve.

We will report safety incidents, near misses and good catches. Sharing facts and stories supports a positive safety culture.

Inclusion and Diversity

Fortis seeks to provide workplaces where employees feel a sense of belonging and are empowered to do their best work. We respect the unique experiences and perspectives of our people and know that together we can generate bold ideas and strong results.

Innovation

Innovation is the key to unlocking the future of safe, reliable, affordable, and cleaner energy for our customers.  We are embracing new and exciting technologies and business processes to realize this future.  Through collaborating across the company, and partnering with key stakeholders like industry organizations, governments, and start-up technology companies, we are bringing innovative solutions to life.

Customer experience is at the centre of every innovation at Fortis – customers are the reason we do what we do.  Our focus on innovation always starts there.

To innovate effectively, we believe in the value of collaboration.  Our approach is simple – we work together to find a better way.  We work hard on fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration in all that we do.  While each operating company sets its own priorities, we realize the power of working together.

The Fortis Innovation Network (FIN) brings together executives and champions from each Fortis company to advance a culture of innovation. The network fosters opportunities to share best practices, collaborate on shared priorities, leverage centers of expertise, and create accountability among peers. As Fortis companies focus on executing, FIN unlocks the full potential of innovation.

We power innovation through networks inside Fortis and meaningful and enduring external partnerships, including those listed below, as well as many universities, incubators, accelerators, and innovators in our local communities.

Indigenous Relationships

Building Relationships with Indigenous Communities

We strive to build authentic, mutually respectful relationships with Indigenous Peoples. Continually listening and learning, we acknowledge unique Indigenous cultures, histories and values – while partnering for progress together.

Collaborating on Energy Projects

Fortis and our companies are committed to building long-term partnerships with Indigenous communities that create economic opportunities.

The Wataynikaneyap Power Project

Fortis and Wataynikaneyap Power have constructed an 1,800-kilometre transmission line that connects 17 remote First Nations to the Ontario power grid for the first time. These communities previously had inefficient and often unreliable electricity systems based on diesel generation, which was limiting opportunities for community growth. Construction is complete and will reduce carbon emissions by 6.6 million tonnes over a 40-year timeframe.

FortisBC Advances Indigenous Relations

FortisBC has along history of engaging with First Nations communities. In 2001, FortisBC worked with many Indigenous leaders to develop its statement of Indigenous principles. Following that groundbreaking work, FortisBC sought to formalize its engagement and initiatives through the Canadian Council of Aboriginal Business (CCAB). As part of CCAB's Progressive Aboriginal Relations™ (PAR) certification, FortisBC engaged with the 58 Indigenous communities it serves in order to set meaningful performance benchmarks in four key areas. In 2023, FortisBC was awarded silver-level PAR designation.
