Celebrating the "Line That Brings Light"

Fortis and its First Nations partners concluded the construction of a transformative grid connection project in 2024. The Wataynikaneyap Power transmission system, whose name means "line that brings light" in Anishininiimowin, is dramatically improving electricity delivery for remote First Nations in Ontario who previously relied on diesel generation.

The transmission system, owned by 24 First Nations (51%) in partnership with Fortis Inc. (39%), who also served as the project manager, along with other private investors, will connect 17 remote First Nations to the Ontario provincial power grid via 1,800 kilometres of transmission lines and 22 substations. First Nations will have the opportunity to own 100% of the transmission system after 25 years, creating an unprecedented model of Indigenous ownership in Canadian infrastructure.
