Cleaner Energy

Since 2019, we have reduced direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 34% and we are targeting further reductions of 50% by 2030 and 75% by 2035. Our 2050 net-zero direct GHG emissions target reinforces Fortis' commitment to further decarbonize over the long term while focusing on reliability and affordability. Achieving these targets may be impacted by factors such as government energy policies, significant load growth, and new clean energy technology.

FortisBC's Plan to Lower Energy Costs and GHG Emissions

FortisBC is investing a record $694.8 million in advanced energy-efficiency initiatives between 2024-2028. The new energy-saving programs will help customers save money while helping to reduce overall GHG emissions by over 740,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide throughout the lifespan of these measures.  A key focus is supporting the adoption of dual-fuel hybrid heating systems so customers can pair an electric heat pump with a high-efficiency gas furnace, ensuring they can access reliable, affordable energy on colder days while lowering their overall emissions.

Adapting to Climate Change

Fortis continues to prepare for more extreme weather events that may impact our customers, communities, and infrastructure. We are investing to enhance our energy grid's resilience against weather events. Additionally, we continue to analyze future climate scenarios and collaborate with industry partners, including the Electric Power Research Institute and the Canadian Standards Association, to address climate adaptation and design standards.

TEP Partners with Customers to Tackle Record Heat

In 2024, Tucson experienced a record-breaking summer with 112 days of 100-degree-plus weather. To reduce the strain on the energy grid, Tucson Electric Power (TEP) offered a pilot program that rewards customers for raising their air conditioning thermostats by a few degrees during peak demand times. Thanks to the participation of 6,900 customers, they collectively saved enough energy to power approximately 2,300 homes.
